Monastery of Saint Theodora

The first information about the history of the monastery of Saint Theodora comes from the Life of the Saint. When the Saint fled there at the age of 25 to become a nun (in the year 837), the monastery was dedicated to the name of the protomartyr Stephen. The areas of the monastery of Saint Stephen that are explicitly and repeatedly mentioned in the text of the Life are the chapel of the Most Holy Theotokos where the saint's relic was placed during its transfer, the communal tomb of the monastery's brothers, the refectory, the kitchen, the cells, the weaving area, the mill, the courtyard, the oaken room, the well and the gatehouse. The catholicon of the monastery probably had a similar architectural form to that of Hagia Sophia, of course on a smaller scale.
